Abortion

Abortion. I don't think there is another word right now in the United States that can create such hostility. You're either Pro-Life, or you're Pro-Choice.

Would it shock you to say I'm both?

Well, I am. I'm pro-life in the belief that I could never have an abortion. But I'm pro-choice in my belief that women should have the right to choose whether or not to terminate a pregnancy.

Don't get me wrong, I don't believe that abortion should be used as a method of brith control, like the condom. Abortion should be used only in extreme circumstances. If the mother's life is in danger, for rape/incest, if a condom broke or happened to have been that 1% when the Pill didn't work.

Pregnancy is a traumatic event. Technically, the fetus can be labelled as a parasite in that it takes nutrients from the mother and gives nothing in return. Why should someone who was raped be forced to live with a life that was conceived for nine months? It was bad enough, now that the person is pregnant doesn't make the healing process any easier. (By the way, if you are going to give me that crap about it being physically impossible for a woman to conceive after a rape, don't bother. It is possible.)

I believe that if at all possible, you should choose to have the child. You can always put it up for adoption. But I believe that whether or not to have an abortion is a choice best left up to the individual. What is right for one person isn't always right for the next person.

So that brings me back to the question: What do I label myself as? I'm pro-choice, but pro-life for myself. I believe that women should have the right to choose whether or not to terminate a pregnancy.
